How do teachers give task instructions in multimodal synchronous online language teaching?
Abstract:
This presentation will explore experienced teachers’ delivery of task instructions in small group online language teaching via videoconferencing. Employing grounded theory and multimodal interaction analysis (Norris, 2004; 2019), we will first describe the site of engagement as constructed through the mediated actions. We then present our framework for understanding the nature of instructions-as-process comprising 13 higher-level actions (Satar & Wigham, 2020) and will give examples of these before examining teachers’ use of the print mode for the higher-level action of 'managing resources'. Our analysis underlines the complexity of sharing task resources in online teaching due to semiotic misalignment and semiotic lag that precludes the establishment of a completely shared interactional space.

Dr Müge Satar is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle University, UK. She is interested in communicative and pedagogical aspects of multimodal interaction for online language learning and teaching, focusing on social presence and meaning-making. She is the co-editor of the Journal of Virtual Exchange.
Ciara R. Wigham is a Senior Lecturer in English Language Teaching and Didactics at Université Clermont Auvergne. Her research interests include multimodal pedagogical communication in online language learning, teacher education in computer-assisted language learning, and methodologies for structuring interactions from online learning situations.
